Lilac and merle French Bulldogs

What lilac, tan points and merle mean, in plain words.

Pippi, a lilac and tan merle French Bulldog

Lilac and merle are the colors we love most, and every one of our girls has them. Here is what the names mean, so you know what you’re looking at when you see one of our puppies.

The colors, in plain words

Color doesn't change a Frenchie's personality or health. It's about looks.

Lilac
A soft, silvery gray coat with a hint of brown. It takes two color genes together, blue and chocolate, and a puppy needs a copy of each from both parents.
Tan points
Tan markings on the eyebrows, cheeks, chest and legs, like a Doberman's.
Merle
A marbled pattern: patches of the full color over a lighter coat. Merle puppies often have light or blue eyes. It only takes one merle parent.
Lilac and tan merle
All three at once: a lilac merle coat with tan points. No two have the same pattern.

Our girls

Every one of our females is lilac and tan or lilac and tan merle.

Merle and health

Two merle parents can have "double merle" puppies, which are much more likely to be born deaf or with eye problems. That's why a merle should be paired with a dog that isn't merle. Ask us about the parents of any litter.
